What is Civil Law?

Civil law is the branch of law concerned with the regulation of relationships and resolution of disputes between two parties. The parties involved can be individuals, administrative authorities or corporate bodies. Civil law issues arise in the areas of both public law and private law. Public law is concerned with the relationship between the state and its citizens, and serves to regulate political and administrative power, for example, powers exercised by central and local government, Parliament, the courts and other public bodies. Private law concerns the relationship between citizens themselves in terms of the rights and obligations
of private parties, including individuals, corporate bodies, trade unions and charities.
